(2006) 27th Pre-Institute Symposium 4 — Meeting AYP and Promoting Accelerated Learning: Effective and Time-Efficient Practices, Interventions and Supports

IDEA 2004 and its regulations, Section 504 accommodations, and the NCLB requirements for AYP stress progress in the general education curriculum for all students, not simply access to curriculum. In this half-day session, Diana Browning Wright and Howard Fulfrost, Esq. discussed specific components for addressing barriers to learning for students with learning differences and/or disabilities. The presenters also highlighted legal requirements and reviewed specific practices schools can adopt to accelerate achievement for all subgroups, including: developing behavior and curriculum accommodation/modification plans that enhance academic achievement; effective/differentiated instructional practices that increase learning rates; and site supervision and teacher support practices. The session also explored the nuances of balancing specialized instruction with general education curriculum mastery.
