Developed by Dr. Mary Lasater, author and national expert on the role of the paraeducator.

Each of the 8 units offers interactive instruction aligned with the national standards for paraeducators (Critical Work Functions) developed by the Education Training Voluntary Partnership through the National Skill Standards Board. You may purchase the entire curriculum, a unit, or an individual module. Each module runs 1.5 to 2 hours.



Unit 1 - Roles and Responsibilities of the Paraeducator

Module 1: Defining Roles and Responsibilities of the Paraeducator - clarifies the roles and responsibilities of the teacher and paraeducator. Paraeducators will learn to identify the continuum of settings from least to most restrictive where they provide services, and create a professional development plan and portfolio.

Module 2: Paraeducators' Responsibilities for Confidentiality, Professionalism and Ethics - explores the legal basis for confidentiality, appropriate professional behavior for paraeducators, and how to respond in specific situations involving student information


Unit 2 - Philosophical, Historical and Legal Foundations of Special Education

Module 1: The History of Special Education - explains how the treatment and education of people with disabilities has progressed in the United States. Paraeducators learn the key laws and events that led to services and supports provided to students with disabilities in today’s schools.

Module 2: Laws Impacting Special Education: IDEA, NCLB, Section 504 - highlights key components of special education law (IDEA), how NCLB applies to students with disabilities, and how students qualify for and receive services through Section 504.

Module 3: The IEP Process - identifies key steps in the IEP process as well as who is involved, what takes place, and timelines for completion of each step. Plus, paraeducators learn their role in the development and ongoing implementation of the IEP.


Unit 3 - Characteristics of Students with Disabilities

Module 1: Disability Overview: Categories, Terminology and Appropriate Interactions - explains the federal disability categories for eligibility for special education services, as well as an alternative way to discuss students in terms of type of need and level of support.

Module 2: Child Development and the Paraeducator - assists paraeducators to help identify developmental levels in children and implement developmentally appropriate goals and activities.

Module 3: The Impact of Multicultural Understanding on Instruction and Communication - helps paraeducators understand how cultural differences impact the way they support instruction and interact with students and families. They will learn how to communicate with students and family members while demonstrating respect of ethnic and cultural differences and the use of culturally sensitive language.


Unit 4 - Assessment, Diagnosis and Evaluation

Module 1: Collecting and Graphing Student Data - details different data collection methods and their purposes.

Module 2: Monitoring Student Academic Performance - identifies the steps required in teaching, stages of learning, and factors that promote learning. eLearners will be able to identify the key components for reading, math and writing instruction, and how to gather and record student performance data.


Unit 5 - Collaboration and Communication

Module 1: Enhancing Paraeducators' Communication Skills - identifies appropriate responses to co-workers, students and parents in common situations.

Module 2: Collaboration Strategies for Paraeducators and Partner Teachers - examines and applies collaborative strategies and formats to use between the paraeducators and partner teachers in specific scenarios.


Unit 6 - Improving Behavior

Module 1: Discipline Policies and Plans for Students with Disabilities - gives an overview of policies and procedures regarding discipline and the use of behavior improvement plans.

Module 2: Understanding Misbehavior and How to Change It - helps paraeducators understand the functions of student behavior and how to prioritize behaviors for change.

Module 3: Behavior Strategies for Teachers and Paraeducators - examines how paraprofessionals’ own behaviors and expectations can elicit appropriate or inappropriate behaviors from students, as well as strategies to manage and improve the behaviors .

Module 4: Monitoring Student Behavior - explains how to collect data on a functional behavioral analysis; create checklists; as well as conduct frequency, interval systems, latency and duration data collection systems and when to use them.


Unit 7 - Paraeducator Support: Instructional Content and Practice

Module 1: Instructional Terminology and Levels of Paraeducator Support - defines common instructional terms and how they are applied across different educational settings.

Module 2: Instructional Strategies for Teachers and Paraeducators - offers strategies that cross content areas and allow for differentiated instruction for: starting a lesson or teaching an objective, further attainment of the objectives, and the end of the lesson.

Module 3: Planning and Implementing Instruction for Math, Reading, Writing and Parallel Curriculum - identifies strategies that can be used to support instruction in math, reading, and writing. Additionally, paraeducators will learn methodology for creating parallel activities along with lesson planning across content areas in general education classrooms.

Module 4: Using Technology to Advance Instruction - details ways to use technology as part of instruction and assessment. Paraeducators will learn a strategy for determining when instructional technology can and should be used to meet student needs and the content objectives that will help them choose what type of technology, if any, should be used.


Unit 8 - Maintaining Physical Well-Being of Students and Staff

Module 1: When a Student Is Exposed to Physical Danger: Policies, Guidelines and Documentation - identifies guidelines for reporting and documenting child abuse and neglect, recognizing unsafe conditions, and properly storing potentially harmful supplies.

Module 2: What Paraeducators Should Know About First Aid, Administering Medication and Feeding - addresses procedures for handling emergencies and basic first aid, procedures and scheduling for administering medication, personal care procedures for maintaining student and paraeducator hygiene, invasive and noninvasive procedures on feeding, and how to handle food allergies.
