The LRE Continuum: Appropriate Placement Decisions Under the IDEA and NCLB
Presented by Melinda Baird, Esq.

With the implementation of NCLB, all children – including children with disabilities – are expected to be performing "at or above grade level" in reading, math and science. Including children with disabilities in the general education classroom will help your schools meet the challenges of NCLB, as well as comply with IDEA '04.

The law requires that each eligible student with a disability is educated, to the maximum extent appropriate, with children who are not disabled. The LRE Continuum explores the five steps of the educational services continuum, from the general education classroom with no supplementary services to homebound placement. Plus, you discover the factors that can influence placement decisions, including:

  • Academic benefit – making "some" academic progress in the general education classroom
  • Non-academic benefit – modeling behaviors, making friends and socialization
  • Disruption in the classroom – behaviors that significantly disrupt teaching or learning, despite FBA, behavior interventions and supplementary services
  • Cost – and its relationship to less-restrictive placement

What’s more, you get answers to educators’ most asked legal questions surrounding LRE.

(2006. 24 min. DVD and VHS format.)
